For luxury lovers: 3 caviar pop-ups open in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague
Marilyn Monroe knew what she was talking about: ‘Fame is like caviar. It’s good to have it but not at every meal’, said the sexy blonde. And she’s right, because every now and then caviar really is irresistible. Because of its price tag and festive character, the holidays are the perfect time to experience it again. And since there is currently a lot of demand for the fancy little eggs, three pop-up caviar shops are opening where you can get your hands on this delicious delicacy.
From 25 euros
Despite these challenging times, caviar can help you end the year with a bang, says renowned caviar entrepreneur Ashkan Mossafaian of House of Caviar & Fine Food. And it doesn’t cost hundreds of euros—at least, you can get caviar for much less. A tin of caviar is available from 25 euros. Caviar is only the real deal when it consists of the unfertilized eggs of the sturgeon. The rest? Fish roe. Much cheaper, much less tasty.
By hand
Eating caviar pure is delicious: place a small spoonful—from a mother-of-pearl spoon, which does not impart any flavor—on the back of your clenched hand. Wait ten seconds, then slurp it up by slowly pressing the caviar against your palate with your tongue. The little balls gently explode in your mouth. A sensational explosion of flavor! Go all out and drink a mature champagne with it (tip: Ruinart!) or ice-cold vodka—a perfect combination.
Caviar with… fries!
The classic is baeri caviar on a blini. Baeri eggs are relatively small and delicious on a blini with a spoonful of crème fraîche. A dollop of osetra caviar on a walnut is surprisingly delicious. Also irresistible: caviar fries.

You’ll find the pop-up store in Rotterdam at the Hilton, at Mario Ridder’s restaurant Joelia. In The Hague, you can visit the former De Graaff cigar shop at Heulstraat 27. At the end of this week, a pop-up will follow on Dam Square in Amsterdam, in a shop owned by Won Yip. The House of Caviar & Fine Food flagship store in the Hilton Hotel Amsterdam is also open.
