Four Breakfasts in Amsterdam

Scandinavian Embassy

Yes, yes, we often hear that the Netherlands has no breakfast culture. But why, then, are so many places in Amsterdam packed to the brim at the weekend? Here are our four favourite breakfast and brunch spots in Amsterdam.

Zurich

There’s a lot going on in and around Jan Evertsenstraat. The hip coffee and burger spots are always packed, and for a lazy weekend breakfast you should definitely head west. To Mercatorplein, to be precise, because that’s where you’ll find Zurich. You can’t miss it—the red, round building certainly stands out. Go for the Zurich breakfast and you’ll get two slices of bread with cheese, ham and fried eggs, a croissant, real butter, jam, a muffin and fruit as well. It costs less than 10 euros. The homemade granola with fruit and Turkish yoghurt is also highly recommended, as are the French toast with white chocolate, mango, blueberries and cinnamon.

G’s

There’s a G’s in Oost, one in West and there’s also a brunch boat. If you’re a fan of Bloody Marys, this is the place for you. It won’t surprise you, but the one with bacon is the favourite of the FavorFlav editorial team. And we also like to make it slutty with an oyster. The food is just as over the top. There’s a sugar doughnut with pulled pork, kimchi and a fried egg, fried chicken with waffles, and eggs Benedict with sauerkraut, pastrami and Emmental. Finish with the faberyayo bourbon peanut butter milkshake and that hangover will disappear.

Wijncafé Worst

Only open in the morning on Sundays, so cherish Worst all the more. According to FavorFlav’s Marjan Ippel, you go here for the huevos rancheros, the classic breakfast dish from Mexico. You get a plate piled high: a corn tortilla, chorizo, black beans, avocado, fried eggs and a spicy tomato salsa. But Marjan’s favourite is brioche toast with Weißwurst, aubergine, roasted tomato and scrambled eggs. Add a glass of apple cider and you’re all set. For those with a sweet tooth, there’s almond tart with crème fraîche and full-fat Turkish yoghurt with warm granola, pecans and honey.

Scandinavian Embassy

Of course, you initially go here for the coffee. But don’t skip breakfast, because they’re masters at that too. Naturally, everything gets a Scandinavian twist. The homemade rye bread with poached egg and wild salmon is the clear favourite. During the week, the doors open as early as 7:30 in the morning, making it ideal for a quick bite and a much-needed caffeine shot before work.
