Peru was recently named the world’s best culinary destination at the World Travel Awards, but Lonely Planet also compiled a list (which Peru did not make this time) telling you not only where to eat, but above all what you must try.

1. San Sebastian

Forget Madrid and Barcelona: for the tastiest pinchos – pintxos — Basque-style — you have to go to San Sebastian. In most places, you simply take them yourself from the bar and pay based on how many skewers you have.

2. Kuala Lumpur

The best laksa in the world can be found in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur to be precise. No idea what laksa is? A spicy noodle soup with green or red curry, coconut milk and fish, chicken, shrimp or tofu.

3. Tokyo

Although the quality of sushi in the Netherlands has improved enormously, you will of course never get it fresher or tastier than in Japan.

4. Texas

Not suitable for vegetarians, but barbecue lovers obviously have to go to Texas. The must-try? Beef brisket.

5. Bangkok

When you say street food, you say Thailand. But which dish should you really not miss? According to Lonely Planet, it’s som tum. This papaya salad with peanuts, tomato and dried shrimp is not for the faint-hearted because it is HOT.

6. Copenhagen

Smørrebrød, Smørrebrød, Smørrebrød. Apart from being a very fun word, this lunch dish — consisting of rye bread with fish or meat, raw vegetables and sauce — is also an unmissable Danish classic.

7. Kaikoura

Nowhere is crayfish supposedly as delicious as in Kaikoura, New Zealand. Worth the trip?

8. Seoul

Korean cuisine is unbelievably good. But there is one classic — which is finally gaining a foothold here too — that you really have to try at least once: bibimbap.

9. Naples

Whatever anyone says, the birthplace of pizza is Naples. And before you indulge in all kinds of ingenious toppings, eat it as basic as possible first: a margherita, then.

10. Hong Kong

For the ultimate dim sum experience, you have to go to Hong Kong. Insanely delicious.
