Gadget: the Guac-Lock

Do you ever find yourself in the rare situation of having leftover guacamole? With this upgraded Tupperware container, your guacamole stays fresh for at least twenty-four hours.

At least, that’s what the manufacturer claims. Epicurious put it to the test and tested the Guac-Lock: a container designed to prevent the incredibly annoying phenomenon of guacamole turning brown. Here’s how it works: avocados contain an enzyme that causes the flesh to turn brown when it comes into contact with oxygen. The Guac-Lock not only comes with an airtight lid, but also has a mechanism that pushes the oxygen out of the container.
Less and less fresh
Does it work? After twenty-four hours, the guacamole of Epicurious editor Lisa looked noticeably greener than when she stored it in a standard plastic container. Even so, the deterioration sets in after that too, and the guacamole slowly but surely starts to look less and less fresh. In short: it’s really only useful if you’re throwing a party and want to make a large batch of guacamole in advance that morning. Though in our view, you can also get a long way by topping your fresh container of guacamole with a layer of water. Just as easy.
