Good news for wine lovers: the new hotspot Walsjérôt
Spending an evening in a wine bar, I love it! I also dare say that by now I’m an expert in the field, because since 2014 I’ve been crisscrossing the Netherlands with my fellow jury members in search of the best, tastiest and most enjoyable wine bars for the annual ‘Wine Bar of the Year’ competition (and here you can read which is the best wine bar in the Netherlands). The next wine bar I’m going to visit is the new Walsjérôt. With the option of a sip, a full or half glass of more than 70 wines, both sociable drinkers and true connoisseurs can indulge here.
Pour away
At Walsjérôt, you can pour your own wine: upon arrival, you receive a card onto which you load an amount of your choice. With your topped-up card, you can head to Walsjérôt’s eye-catcher: the wine wall. White, red or rosé: you can pour more than 70 wines from all over the world by the glass. Made your choice? Hold your card in front of one of the wine taps and choose how much wine you want. First taste a sip, order half a glass or simply fill it right to the brim? The choice is yours.
Nothing stuffy
Each wine has a card describing the grape variety, origin and flavour. Taste as many as you like and discover what you enjoy. For example, try a unique or exclusive wine that you wouldn’t otherwise be likely to drink. Could you use some help? Of course, the sommelier will be happy to advise you, but don’t expect a stiff tasting. At Walsjérôt, the atmosphere is relaxed and approachable, and you can enjoy yourself at your own pace and in your own way.
Line your stomach
You can’t keep drinking on an empty stomach. Well, technically anything is possible, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it). Fortunately, you can eat here too. Put together your own cheese platter or complete your drinks with flammküchen or a charcuterie board. Naturally, the menu also features delicious oysters (great with sparkling wine!). Vegetarian? Then try the beetroot couscous.
Happy in Blijdorp
Walsjérôt is located on Bentinckplein in Blijdorp, one of Rotterdam’s trendiest neighbourhoods. The opening will take place in September.
