Do you really have to leave this out for a better night’s sleep?

There are all kinds of things people say you’re better off not eating or drinking before going to bed, and honestly, we think that would make your evenings pretty boring… No alcohol? No garlic? Well, there’s no way we’re going to manage giving those up for a large part of the week, that’s for sure. And do you know what else ‘they’ (the nutrition experts who are sometimes our friends but sometimes our enemies) want us to avoid?

Pepperoni pizza! Or any spicy pizza, really… That’s just mean, isn’t it?! Never again a late-night or midnight slice with delicious big dollops of ’nduja on it, or extra-spicy pepperoni? Sorry, but explain why first…
A tricky combination
According to nutrition expert Erin Palinsky, the combination of the spiciness of these types of sausage, the fat in the cheese and the high acidity of the tomato sauce is pretty disastrous for a good night’s sleep. Heartburn from the acidic tomato and the poor digestion of the fat and lactose in the cheese can cause your digestive system to struggle at night.
Weighing it up
It’s difficult to sleep with acid reflux. But then again, if you’re cheerful and happy, you sleep very well, we tell ourselves. And what does spicy pizza make you? Exactly: cheerful and happy. So are we going to follow this advice? Honestly, that seems highly unlikely… But thank you, Ms Palinsky, and all the best!
