Across Asia, but especially in Japan, food and cartoons go hand in hand. And sometimes they become completely intertwined. For example, there is a Hong Kong Hello Kitty restaurant chain. Every dish served, from dim sum to doughnuts, features the image of the cute kitty with the bow. Served in 100 percent Hello Kitty décor by staff dressed in Hello Kitty outfits.

Hello Kitty food has since become a multibillion-dollar business worldwide. Especially in Japan, the country known for the cube-shaped watermelon that changes hands for a fortune.

Before harvest, the image of Hello Kitty is carved into the melon.

A similar fortune is also paid for the latest craze: melons with Hello Kitty on the rind. For around 50 euros each, you can call yourself the owner of this piece of fruit, into which the image of the fortunate kitty was carved before harvest.

The Japanese producer hopes to sell a thousand of them this year. That will surely work out. After all, his fellow countrymen are also happy to pay considerable sums for a perfect strawberry or a so-called sekai ichi apple.

Those, like the Hello Kitty melon, do come in hyper-luxurious packaging.

I wonder if anyone ever actually eats them?
