HEMA continues to surprise us! Last week, they already introduced gluten-free kruidnoten and kruidnoten with less sugar, and now they’ve added even more kruidnoten varieties to the shelves.

Pastry becomes kruidnoot

In addition to these and the previously introduced spelt and whole wheat kruidnoten, HEMA is taking it one step further this year with the introduction of the new lemon cheesecake and carrot cake flavors. Yes, you read that right: your favorite baked goods (well, at least mine) disguised as cheerful little kruidnoten! Both kruidnoten are covered in white chocolate and cost €2 per bag.

Kruidnoten versus pepernoten

Now that these special kruidnoten are available, that one question immediately comes up again: what actually is the difference between kruidnoten and pepernoten? Well: pepernoten are those chewy, irregularly shaped chunks that taste somewhat like taaitaai (brilliant name, by the way, because those things are so chewy!)—and, incidentally, contain no pepper at all. Kruidnoten are the delicious, crunchy, hard little half-spheres that you can now also buy in the flavor of the most delicious pastries.
