Hospitality industry hit hard by inflation
Inflation is affecting us all, that much is clear. Everything has become more expensive: from supermarkets to holidays, and of course the hospitality industry. And the latter is having a particularly hard time dealing with it. Their purchases are becoming more expensive too, while they are noticing that guests are increasingly staying away.
According to research, as many as half of all Dutch people are going to restaurants less often because of inflation. And of those who still go frequently, more than half (51 percent) say they are keeping the higher prices in mind and leaving smaller tips.
Preferring to get together at home
I notice it in my own circle too: meals are increasingly being held at home, whereas in the past we would have been more likely to go out. And this is a trend that is very much taking hold in the Netherlands: around 76 percent say they would rather eat at home. But what about the hospitality industry, which needs to be supported too, right? 41 percent say they simply can no longer afford to do so because of inflation.
But the hospitality industry is of course also dealing with more expensive purchases: 66 percent say that their costs have risen enormously as well. It would be logical to see this reflected in menu prices, but naturally they would rather avoid that: almost seven in ten restaurants say they can no longer avoid doing so and have therefore had to adjust their prices.
This research was published in Misset Horeca and conducted by Lightspeed. And I certainly recognize this in myself and those around me; restaurants in particular are being ‘avoided’ because of the prices. Increasingly, people suggest eating at home and then going somewhere for a drink afterwards. Even so, the hospitality industry is trying to keep costs down — for example by cutting back on staff.
Ordering via QR code is becoming increasingly popular, partly because it requires fewer serving staff. How fun! (Not). Will that QR code become the hospitality trend of the year…?
