Hotspot: Café Cómodo in Amsterdam

Jan Pieter Heijestraat in Amsterdam Oud-West is a popular and much-loved street for drinks, but did you know it’s also a great place for authentic, delicious South American food? Exotic and homely at the same time, the Argentinian chef at Café Cómodo cooks nostalgic dishes that pair perfectly with cocktails.

Café Cómodo has been around for two years now, and on weekends it gets packed at the bar. But with chef Emiliano Gurrera joining the team, they also want to put themselves on the map with a surprising culinary menu. During the day you can have lunch, and in the evening you can hang out at the bar with a beer, a generous glass of wine or a cocktail on one side of the restaurant, while on the other you can indulge in dishes such as ceviche, tamales and excellent meat.
Warm and colorful
The interior is colorful and cozy – which is also the translation of the Spanish name Cómodo. So not the Indonesian dragon, although it does feature as an illustration on the menu, but simply ‘comfortable’. And you can taste that in the food too. Gurrera cooked at a very high level at the Hyatt Hotel Mendoza, but actually lost his inspiration there. “Here I have the chance to cook the food that makes me happy. Dishes that remind me of home, combined with the wonderful flavors and ingredients from my travels around the world. Much simpler than before, but I hope the cheerful guests here enjoy it even more!”
Top-notch
The meat is genuinely excellent. We eat an outstandingly grilled Poulet Noir (slow-cooked first, then seared briefly), a generous côte de boeuf, and delicious pork belly marinated in Malbec. A small warning about the octopus: we’re pretty used to spicy food, but that sauce is REALLY hot…

Desserts
The ice cream here is very good! We could have done without the kiwi on the cheesecake back in 1985, but the caramelized sugar curls are delicious, with a hint of sesame.
Conclusion
Go! Great neighborhood, warm people, lively atmosphere, and especially if you love meat, you’ll feel right at home here!
