Sandwiches in company cafeterias too expensive

Only one in ten employees has lunch in the company cafeteria. The reason? The food is simply too expensive. The average worker spends around 2.70 euros on lunch, which is not enough to get by in the cafeteria. As a result, people are increasingly opting for lunch from the supermarket. Prices have risen so much because employers have increasingly cut lunch subsidies in recent years. Partly as a result, company cafeterias have become twice as expensive over the past ten years.

Jumbo takes over La Place

Fortunately, you can continue to enjoy La Place’s fresh sandwiches, pizzas and smoothies. The 61 locations of La Place are being taken over by supermarket chain Jumbo. According to the chain, the traditional division between supermarkets and foodservice is disappearing. Customers decide for themselves where, when and what they eat. Jumbo wants to respond to this by becoming stronger in e-commerce and ‘eat it or take it’ concepts.

Dutch people spend more in supermarkets

Last year, supermarkets in the Netherlands generated 35.9 billion euros in revenue, an increase of almost five percent compared with 2014. An unexpected reason for this considerable increase is that the past year had 53 weeks, while 2014 had only 52. Over the first 52 weeks, revenue was 2.5 percent higher last year, so it was still a substantial increase. On average, people visit the supermarket 140 times a year.
