How to: avoid being mistaken for restaurant staff
Does this ever happen to you? Of the three times you walk to the restroom or bar during your restaurant visit, there’s always someone who waves you over to their table or casually asks you, “Can I pay now?” Annoying, right? Prevent confusion and follow these tips!
Fanny packs?
No, no and no again. Especially during the season of large outdoor terraces and beach clubs: leave your fanny pack at home. It won’t be long before a guest spots your black belt bag out of the corner of their eye and assumes that your jingling house keys are actually the change they’ve been waiting five minutes for.
Confidence: not right now
Walk through the restaurant with as little confidence as possible. Keep your head down, make yourself small, even look a little unhappy. Look like anything but someone who runs a business (namely, head held high; proud). Even if you know where the restroom is, look around a little uncertainly instead of walking towards it in a straight line with determination. Be wonderfully insecure!
Hawaiian shirt: great idea!
A lovely day of hospitality venues ahead? Are you going somewhere for lunch, then having an apple pie somewhere else, drinks somewhere else and settling down elsewhere for dinner? Put on a funky print! There’s a good chance that at 3 out of the 5 places you visit, the staff will be wearing a plain black or white shirt. So make sure you stand out in terms of clothing!
No eye contact
Avoid eye contact at all times. Eye contact with guests is the perfect excuse for these hungry, impatient day-trippers to throw their arm straight into the air in no time, just like an eager student at the front of the class. Possibly followed by a snap of the fingers. No, prevent this and avoid eye contact.
