How to make the most delicious ketchup yourself

From the lemon mayonnaise of your dreams to the ultimate aioli, from Hollandaise to rémoulade: you can actually make any sauce yourself. It’s easy, delicious and, after all, you know exactly what you’re putting in your own sauce. Yet we’re less likely to make ketchup ourselves. There’s no need for that, because it’s just as easy as all those other sauces. So go on, grab that immersion blender from the cupboard and make your own homemade ketchup from now on!

Ketchup is indispensable on (or alongside) your fries, and no grilled cheese sandwich or mayochup is complete without it. And it’s even more delicious when you make your own ketchup. Add fresh herbs and spices you enjoy and make it your own signature ketchup.
How to make your own ketchup
- Heat some olive oil in a saucepan. Briefly sauté the onion, tomatoes and tomato paste in it.
- Then add the sugar, water and red wine vinegar and let everything simmer for a few minutes until the tomatoes have softened.
- Season with pepper and salt and blend until smooth with an immersion blender. For ultra-smooth ketchup, pass it through a sieve after blending it with the immersion blender.
Adding herbs and spices
To give it your own twist, you can add spices such as cayenne pepper, cinnamon, paprika, nutmeg, coriander seeds or ginger in the first step. It’s better to add fresh herbs such as basil and parsley at the end, before blending the ketchup smooth with the immersion blender.
