How to Recognize a Ripe Pineapple

Such a shame: cutting open a piece of fruit only to discover that it is not yet ripe. Yet it is often difficult to tell exactly how far the ripening process has progressed, especially with a pineapple. Follow these three steps to maximize your chances of choosing a ripe pineapple.

Step 1 – Smell
A ripe pineapple smells sweet. If it does not smell of anything, it is not ready yet. A fermented smell is never a good sign. You can recognize this by a vinegar- or alcohol-like smell. Pineapples with this smell are usually overripe.
Step 2 – Look
The stem is the part of the pineapple that supplies sugars to the fruit. This is where the pineapple will begin to change color during the ripening process. The pineapple should have a golden-yellow color, but it can also happen that a ripe pineapple remains green. Above all, trust your instincts and check whether the pineapple looks healthy. Do not buy a pineapple that looks bruised or has brown leaves.
Step 3 – Feel
This step is at least as important as the first two. A ripe pineapple feels firm, and you should only be able to dent it slightly. Does it feel too soft? Do not buy it. Also try pulling a leaf from the fruit. Does it come out easily? Then your pineapple is probably ripe. Is it difficult? Leave it for a little longer.
