Huh? ‘Pubs refuse MBO students’

mbo studenten

Well, honestly, what is this supposed to mean? TV programme Radar investigated this and concluded that, since 2020, MBO students essentially no longer count. For example, they are refused entry at sports clubs, shops and pubs. Bizarre.

Student Jarno went out in Utrecht, and Radar went undercover with him, visiting six pubs. And it was pretty painful to see how he was treated there.

‘No, this is only for university of applied sciences students here’

That is the answer he gets at the first pub. The bouncer is uncompromising and says it is the ‘owner’s rules’. When he later tries at a club, he is also asked for a student card. When the bouncer discovers that he is an MBO student, he is refused entry.

This comes as no surprise to Jelmer Becker, chairman of the Jongeren Organisatie Beroepsonderwijs MBO (JOB). He experienced the same thing in Amsterdam, where he had to pay 400 euros at a sports centre — while students had to pay 120 euros. Well, students… You only got that rate if you studied at a university of applied sciences or university.

Even Spotify and MacBook are joining in with this education discrimination

Yes, even if you want to buy a MacBook with a student discount, you simply pay the full price if you study at an MBO. Ridiculous, right? Radar made the item below about it, and I was genuinely left flabbergasted.
