IKEA warns about its own glasses: hot drinks can cause them to shatter (resulting in burns)

Drinking boiling-hot tea from a glass… Some people find that really strange. Or scary. Because what if it shatters? That would be a nightmare, right?! Bad news: IKEA warns that this nightmare could easily become reality if you drink hot drinks from their glasses. And that can have very nasty consequences.

It specifically concerns the glasses from the POKAL series: POKAL glass 27 cl (clear glass and all colors), POKAL glass 35 cl (clear glass and all colors), and POKAL glass 65 cl (clear glass). And wouldn’t you know it, I’ve already drunk liters of tea from the latter glass by now. So far, that has always gone well, but I’m no longer so sure about it.
IKEA’s POKAL glasses can shatter
If an IKEA POKAL glass shatters, it can cause scalding or burns. IKEA warns about this in a press release on its website. Our favorite store for great kitchen gadgets says that POKAL glasses are made of tempered glass. If there is a scratch or damage on the glass, it can suddenly shatter. A POKAL glass filled with piping-hot liquid can then cause scalding or burns.
IKEA says that fortunately, it is rare for this to happen. But forewarned is forearmed, according to the Swedish furniture giant. Glass is breakable, and you need to handle it carefully. Especially because a scratch or damage may not immediately cause a crack, but could do so later.

Better safe than sorry
So what can we POKAL-glass drinkers (or, for that matter, anyone who drinks boiling-hot tea from a glass) do now? IKEA recommends always setting the glass down when pouring hot drinks into it. So don’t hold the glass. Another good tip: make sure your glass isn’t exposed to extreme temperature changes. If the glass comes out of the cupboard cold, don’t immediately pour piping-hot tea into it. Warm the glass up first with warm tap water. Better safe than sorry.
At least they assure us that product safety is their top priority—and that includes POKAL glasses. You know, IKEA definitely won’t let us shatter. I’m going to think for a moment about whether I really need to keep drinking boiling-hot tea from a glass.
