At Erewhon, the luxury supermarket chain in California, you pay $19 for… a single strawberry. Yes, you read that right. For one solitary strawberry, you pay nearly twenty dollars.
The influencer who made it go viral
This absurd trend came to light when influencer Alyssa Antoci posted a TikTok video in which she tried the exclusive fruit from Japanese brand Elly Amai. Her verdict? “The best strawberry I’ve ever tasted.” Fine, of course, but at that price, we expect at least an explosion of flavor and instant teleportation to a strawberry field in Japan.

Expensive times, expensive strawberries
The online reactions say it all. The video went viral, and people couldn’t believe their eyes. “This is so absurd,” one TikTok user wrote. Another openly wondered whether Erewhon might be a social experiment to see how far they can push their prices. And honestly? We get it.
It’s not just any strawberry, either. Elly Amai fruit comes from Japan’s “Strawberry Kingdom” in Tochigi Prefecture, where it is grown from December to June. It is delivered to Erewhon within 24 to 48 hours of being picked. That explains part of the price, but it’s still difficult to swallow. Especially when you consider that, for that amount of money, you can buy a whole lot more.
Is it worth it?
Of course, everyone wants to know: is this expensive bite worth it? According to Alyssa, the strawberry tastes “like a strawberry, but multiplied by a thousand,” and apparently resembles candy. Sounds delicious, but should you empty your savings account for a single strawberry? No, thank you.
