Because honestly: a punnet of strawberries costs a fortune. How sad is it, then, when you have to throw them away because you didn’t manage to eat them in time? Today, you can put an end to that for good. The strawberry farmer has a golden freshness tip for us.

The vinegar trick: fresh for an extra week!

To enjoy your strawberries for longer, you need a bowl, colander, vinegar, water and a piece of kitchen paper. Fill the bowl one-quarter full with vinegar and three-quarters full with water. Put the strawberries in it until they are all fully submerged. Leave them there for about fifteen minutes. Then pour the strawberries into a colander. Let them drain, but watch out: don’t rinse them! Once you’ve shaken off the excess water, place them on the piece of kitchen paper to dry. Once dry, you can put them back in the punnet and eat them. You’ll notice that the strawberries now stay fresh much longer. And by that we mean at least a week—as shown by The Kitchn’s strawberry freshness test. This also works with other soft fruits, such as blueberries and raspberries.

In or out of the fridge?

It’s sometimes still a topic of debate: should you keep strawberries in the fridge or not? The answer is yes, if you want to keep them fresh for longer, at least. If you use the vinegar trick above and then put the punnet of strawberries in the fridge, you’ll be able to enjoy your healthy treats for days longer.

Get started with strawberries

Have plenty of strawberries in your fridge? They’re fantastic as snacks, but you can do so much more with them. For example, make a salad with watermelon, feta and mint. Or bring out your inner baking talent with this divine lime tiramisu cake with strawberries. A real showstopper at your next party. And with homemade strawberry jam or strawberry butter, you can instantly give your lunch a major upgrade. You’ll soon be the king or queen of the summer kings!
