Move over Aperol: the Hugo Spritz is the drink of the summer

Hugo Spritz

Hugo and Canei were the pre-drinks when I was 16. We stocked up on liters of it and knocked them back before heading into the city around midnight. Honestly: I haven’t had a Hugo in a very long time. But the Hugo Spritz is about to change that.

When summer arrives in the Netherlands, we’re never entirely sure whether we can expect nice weather or not. What we are sure of: we’re getting back to cocktails. Whether the thermometer explodes from the heat or we have to sit on the terrace in a sweater. We also know for sure that every year a new cocktail brightens up outdoor life (have you tried the Rosé Aperol Spritz yet?). And do you know who’s back after being away? Hugo!

Viral on TikTok

The Hugo Spritz is going – how could it be otherwise – viral on TikTok. There, we’re shown in painstaking detail how to make this summery cocktail with a nostalgic twist ourselves. And it turns out: we don’t need to buy a bottle of Hugo. No, we recreate the flavor of Hugo in a different way.

So how do you do that? Pour about 15 milliliters of elderflower liqueur (for example, Saint Germain) into a cocktail glass. If you want your cocktail to be a little less strong, you can also use elderflower syrup. Top it up with a few mint leaves, which you muddle in the glass. Then add about 120 milliliters of prosecco to your elderflower-mint mixture. Stir well before adding ice cubes to your cocktail. Finally, pour 30 milliliters (or a little more) of sparkling water into the glass. Optionally finish with lime, and your new favorite drink is born. Cheers!
