Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves. The difference from regular green tea? With matcha, you drink the whole leaf in powdered form. This makes its flavor more intense. Matcha is often used in Japan in traditional tea ceremonies, but nowadays also in lattes, smoothies, baked goods and… iced coffees, of course.

Iced Matcha Coffee: The Ultimate Summer Drink

This iced matcha coffee is the ultimate all‑in‑one drink: it gives you energy, it’s incredibly delicious and refreshing and, if you still want to score some points with it, it makes for a great Insta shot. A lovely way to start your morning – especially when you have such a sweet colleague as I do who makes it for you (you know who you are). But whether you work from home or want to give your summer weekend morning an extra boost – this drink is the perfect match.

How to Make It in 5 Steps

  • Dissolve the matcha
Put the matcha in a bowl, add the lukewarm water and whisk vigorously with the matcha whisk until a layer of foam forms.

  • First layer of ice
Fill the glass to the rim with ice cubes.

  • Add the milk and matcha
Carefully pour the cold (plant-based) milk over the ice, followed by the matcha.

  • Add the espresso
Make an espresso (yourself or using a pod from De Koffiejongens) and pour it on top of the matcha.

  • Finish & serve
Let it rest for a moment to create beautiful layers. Stir just before drinking. Cheers!

Tips for Variations

Matcha comes in all kinds and qualities, and good matcha is never cheap.

  • Preferably use ceremonial matcha for a pure flavor profile.

  • Switch up the milk: coconut milk makes it more tropical, while almond milk adds a nutty note. Love coconut? Garnish it with toasted coconut flakes too.

  • Instead of regular ice, try matcha ice cubes: freeze matcha dissolved in water for a day. That way, you can taste matcha down to the last sip.

And if you want to make it a little more exciting, go for a Matcha Martini.
