Is Maroeska a pro already?

We all watch Heel Holland Bakt for the delicious pies and cakes, but above all because we empathize with the home bakers. Sunken cakes give us a heart attack, and when they do well, we’re oh so happy. However, there is one ‘home baker’ that a lot of people don’t empathize with at all: contestant Maroeska turns out not to be an amateur whatsoever!

Hordes of Twitter users are furious. Designer Maroeska has won the title of star baker three weeks in a row, while she owns her own catering business and organizes culinary workshops. She even came in at number 63 in our FavorFlav Food Top 100 for the cookbook Hoe Dan? that she published last year.

Reason enough for people to lash out at her and Omroep Max on social media. According to many, someone who is involved in cooking and baking at that level does not belong in a competition for amateur bakers.

She is certainly a busy bee, but do a cookbook and a catering business mean that she is too much of a pro for the popular baking competition? This year, Omroep Max applied the same criterion as in previous seasons, namely that a candidate must not have attended a professional baking course. “She learned to bake simply by practicing a lot, just like the other home bakers,” a spokesperson tells NOS.

Or is the rest just that bad?

I have to honestly say that I agree. Yes, she has published a cookbook, but so have we at FavorFlav (get it here!). So am I no longer allowed to compete in Heel Holland Bakt because I’ve written a delicious recipe for red velvet cake? When I see the show’s bakers creating such spectacular showpieces, I’m nowhere near that level yet, believe me.

Fortunately, plenty of people are also standing up for Maroeska. Someone pointed out that in her cookbook of 120 recipes, there are only seven pies, three cakes and three cookies. So I think it’s all not too bad. On Twitter, lots of people are also wondering: ‘Is Maroeska really that good? Or is the rest just that bad?’ In any case, I’m very curious to see who will be crowned star baker tonight.
