Jianbing: the Chinese version of the pancake

jianbing

Until recently, it was one of China’s best-kept street food secrets: jianbing, a type of pancake. In China, people eat it for breakfast, and you can buy them on almost every street corner. The good news: this exotic pancake is also becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands.

Crêpe

Jianbing actually most closely resembles a filled crêpe. The batter is a mix of wheat and mung beans, spread out on a large plate like a crêpe in France. Then several eggs are spread over the pancake and cooked along with it.

Filling

In addition to the eggs, jianbing are often filled with spring onions, coriander, spicy pickles, crispy puffed wonton,  hoisin sauce and chili sauce. Depending on the filling, they are therefore suitable not only for breakfast, but also for lunch, as a snack or for dinner. Once filled, they are rolled up and cut in half, wrapped in a napkin or bag, and ready to eat!

Amsterdam

And where can you find the pancake in the Netherlands? In Amsterdam, you can get a homemade jianbing variant in Westerpark at Dumplings or in the shopping centre at Osdorpplein at Kong Fu Milk Tea .
