John Halvemaan wins Johannes van Dam Prize

John Halvemaan wins the 2016 Johannes van Dam Prize. Claudia Roden (2012), Harold McGee (2013) and Carlo Petrini (2014) had previously won the prize. 

Keep it simple

Halvemaan worked as the head chef of La Rive at the Amstel Hotel, among other positions, and from 1989 onwards at his own restaurant, ‘Halvemaan’. With his motto Keep it simple , he has influenced the new generation of chefs who are now doing very well. He has also devoted considerable attention to Dutch recipes and ingredients.

International lifetime achievement award

The international lifetime achievement award – named after culinary journalist and writer Johannes van Dam – is presented by the University of Amsterdam to a person who has made an exceptional contribution, through their publications and/or knowledge, to the dissemination of knowledge about international gastronomy.

The award will be presented to Halvemaan on 4 November during the launch of Kookboeken7daagse.
