Jumbo introduces pink baskets for people looking for a date

No date for Valentine’s Day tomorrow? Or are you ready for a new love? This year, Jumbo is once again playing Cupid with its pink baskets. In previous years, this proved to be a tried-and-tested success, as we spotted these pink baskets in Woerden in 2018 and the year before in Snel en Polanen. Even just before the coronavirus pandemic, you could score a date this way in Nieuwkoop. This year, the romance will be found across the border.

Across the border, yes, because I didn’t spot the pink baskets at my branch in Amsterdam-Noord. One place where they can be found, among others, is Belgian Lauwe, a village in West Flanders. The pink baskets could be found there last year too, and due to the campaign’s success, it has returned once again.

Why not a nationwide pink-basket campaign?

I really don’t understand this; it’s such a fun gimmick — and then they only do it in one or two branches each year. A real missed opportunity, because this campaign is currently even going viral on TikTok. And well, they already have those pink baskets in stock, right?

‘Last year, there were a few dates after all,’ came the response from Belgium when the campaign was discussed. But we did it just a little better here: in the Vathorst district of Amersfoort, they also bring out the baskets every year, and a baby has even been born as a result.

Her belly kept getting bigger…

This is what owner Marco Vos told AD: ‘[There was] a couple who dared to speak to each other because of the pink basket. After that, they did their shopping here together. The employees in the deli department saw her belly getting bigger and bigger. Eventually, they came here to pick up a basket for the baby photos. Isn’t it wonderful that a baby was born as a result of the campaign involving the pink shopping baskets? We were genuinely amazed.’
