Jumbo issues food warning: spinach possibly contaminated with fecal bacteria
Supermarket chain Jumbo has issued an important food warning and is urging customers to return bags of unwashed spinach. They may contain STEC bacteria (a type of E. coli).
This bacterium can make you quite ill; it is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. The term ‘fecal bacteria’ is also often used, incidentally. This is because infection with the bacterium causes diarrhea. Symptoms range from virtually none or mild diarrhea to bloody diarrhea.
Risky products
Raw beef products such as steak tartare, osseworst, filet américain and carpaccio are risky foods, but STEC infections can also occur after eating raw vegetables such as lettuce and spinach, and sprouts such as bean sprouts. Cooked vegetables pose no problem because the bacterium is killed by heating.

In addition to Jumbo Spinazie Ongewassen 450 gram, Jumbo is also recalling Jumbo Spinazie Gewassen 600 gram. The products may contain STEC bacteria.
