Kale pie: the ultimate carnival snack

During carnival, it’s important to line your stomach properly. Of course, you can do that with a portion of fries, zoesvleisj or sausage rolls, but from this year onwards, you can also do it with a genuine kale pie.

Bakkerij Van Doorn, with branches in, among others, Den Bosch, Boxtel and Sint-Oedenrode, claims to have come up with a healthier option for starting the festivities. Since the pie also contains béchamel sauce, smoked sausage and grated cheese in addition to kale and potatoes, the option isn’t entirely health freak proof, but if that’s what you’re concerned about, you might as well not celebrate carnival at all.

The pie has already become wildly popular, and baker Mark van Doorn now receives around 700 kilos of mash every day, he tells AD. Want to get your hands on one of these sought-after pies too? You can do so at all the bakery’s branches, but it can also be ordered online. For a mere €15, this mash pie is yours.
