Koepelcafé Amsterdam is back: classic, cozy and better than ever
The traditional brown café is slowly disappearing, but fortunately: Koepelcafé Amsterdam is here to stay! Recently reopened after a fresh update, it is thankfully still that warm neighborhood café with a golden edge. This icon has been in its place on Kattengat since 1975, and after almost fifty years, its soul has fortunately remained intact, now with a touch of modern shine.
“We were never really gone”
The interior is exactly what you hope for in a place like this: historic charm combined with modern warmth. What does that mean? Classic details, fresh colors, a bar calling out for a good glass, and seating areas where you unintentionally spend hours. Whether you come for drinks with friends or lunch with your laptop, it immediately feels familiar.
The neighborhood living room
Manager Boris Verheijnen puts it beautifully: “Koepelcafé is the neighborhood living room.” And you can feel it. From a quick espresso to a hearty entrecôte or a cold glass of rosé on the terrace: anything goes. You walk in with an empty stomach or an empty fridge and leave with a full belly and a good mood.
The menu: Dutch classics
The menu features the familiar flavors of days gone by. Think cold pea soup (yes, really, and worth trying, €10), beef stew with fries (€21), the Koepelcafé burger (€19), and the delicious Holtkamp cheese croquette on bread (€13). For those with a sweet tooth, there are desserts such as speculaas crumble, poffertjes with caramel or a chocolate brownie (all €10).

You’re also well catered for when it comes to drinks, or rather: brewed beverages. The drinks menu revolves around characterful beers from local brewers, beautiful wines and damn good Spritz options for sunny days.
Open 7 days a week
In April 2025, Koepelcafé Amsterdam blew out no fewer than 50 candles. Yet the place feels anything but old. On the contrary: it is precisely the mix of past and future that makes the café so special. They are open every day from 12:00 to 23:00, so you can always drop by.
