Let’s go: in Italy, there’s a fountain that dispenses free red wine
No idea whether paradise exists, but if it does: my paradise consists partly of lots of wine. At the very least, paradise for me means you never drink the last bottle and are left thirsty (you can see that fear reflected in my wine supply at home, by the way). Just imagine: an inexhaustible source full of wine. Isn’t that heavenly? Well, let’s go then. Let’s all move to Ortona, Italy.
Because that’s where the Free Red Wine Fountain stands, and I probably don’t need to explain that name to you—and no, this is not an April Fool’s joke. I don’t dare joke about free wine.
“A special place with a special story”
That’s how they describe the fountain on their website (yes, the fountain even has its own website). And who exactly are “they”? The fountain is located on the grounds of Dora Sarchese, an estate where winegrowers work. So you can also take a tour here and taste different wines, but of course there’s also a good chance you’ll end up lingering at this fountain.
But it does indeed have a special story: the fountain stands along the route taken by pilgrims heading towards Santiago de Compostela. And yes, during such a long journey, you need a little refreshment now and then… In other words: the fountain. Sounds perfectly logical, doesn’t it?
Not the only free wine fountain
It sounds so wonderful, and it rolls off the tongue so nicely: free wine fountain. But if you don’t feel like going to Italy (does such a thing exist?), you can also head to Spain: there’s one in Ronda too! Well, I know where I’m going this summer. I could use a drink (or 2, 3).
