Lidl sells hybrid meat: minced meat mix with pea protein

Lidl hybride gehakt

The idea is that by eating less meat and more vegetables, you’re doing twice as much for your health. That’s why Lidl is launching a hybrid minced meat mix. Yes, it’s a bit like a hybrid car. Part petrol, part electric here means 60% beef mince and 40% pea protein. According to the supermarket chain, it tastes the same as mince made entirely from beef. Lidl wants to motivate minced-meat lovers to choose mince with a lower environmental impact. In addition, the minced meat mix is also cheaper than beef mince.

This kind of thing isn’t entirely new. Four years ago, Albert Heijn was already selling hybrid products from the FiftyFifty brand, in various forms such as mince and schnitzel. Perhaps the world wasn’t waiting for them; these hybrid products are no longer available at Albert Heijn.

No money

Geert de Vries, Lidl buyer, is fully confident that the new minced meat mix will be a success. “With this minced meat mix, you can make the tastiest pasta bolognese, as well as a classic meatball. I dare say that even a true meat lover wouldn’t be able to distinguish this minced meat mix from regular mince.” The minced meat mix is now available in all Lidl stores in a 300-gram package. It costs €2.29. Honestly: that’s a bargain.

Smart thinking from the supermarket chain, because price is the main obstacle preventing people from choosing plant-based options more often. Making plant-based products the same price as, or cheaper than, meat and dairy removes that obstacle. You’ll find this innovation in the meat aisle, where meat eaters shop, rather than with the plant-based products.

Real meat

Incidentally, not everyone is enthusiastic. Personally, I don’t like any of it: fake meat, meat from a printer and hybrid meat. Maybe I’m too simple minded for this kind of novelty. If I want to eat meat, I eat meat, and if I want to eat (more) vegetables, I eat (more) vegetables. It seems much healthier to me to eat good-quality (preferably grass-fed) meat than meat with things added to it.
