The romance begins on the way there. The restaurant is located in a winding alleyway in the Silent City. The narrow streets lined with tall, sandy-colored buildings briefly make you feel as though you’ve ended up in a tale from One Thousand and One Nights. Disney lovers like me get wildly enthusiastic here: this could easily be the setting for a scene from Aladdin.

500 years of history and romance

The Medina Restaurant has been a household name in Malta for 500 years. 500 years! Incredible, right? You can still clearly feel the history of the place everywhere. Vaulted ceilings, centuries-old bricks and curling stair railings take you back in time. At the same time, the restaurant also has a modern feel. It’s a beautiful mix of old and new; in the cocktail bar, for example, you’ll see illuminated shelves with bottles of liquor set against the old, honey-colored walls.

There are plenty of lovely spots where the two of you can swoon together. Inside, beneath the curved ceilings, for example, where you can choose a private corner under romantic lighting. Or opt for the courtyard. Beneath the casually draped cloths and among the lush plants, it briefly feels as though you’re in another world. A world full of love, romance and each other. Sigh.

A Michelin-worthy evening

Of course, the evening only becomes truly romantic when there’s delicious food involved too. And yes, you can certainly count on that at The Medina Restaurant. Michelin has been recommending this place for years. Expect Arab and Mediterranean influences, such as fresh sea bass with calamari and mussels, and grilled halloumi with honey, eggplant and zucchini. Want to casually drop a great romantic idea on your date? Suggest starting with casual sharing bites. Think fresh falafel, baba ganoush and homemade pork croquettes. You take a bite, I take a bite… The way to the heart is through the stomach, right? Finish with an incredible dessert—such as ‘Helwa tat-Tork’: almond praline with local honey and Xwejni salt—and you’ll have a dazzling ending to a wonderful evening. In the pocket!
