Lovely stuff: Lidl is now selling croquette rolls for drinks at home

Well, that’s delicious news, isn’t it: we can almost sit down at an outdoor café terrace again. A bit of a letdown that we have to leave the terrace again at 6 p.m. That’s always the moment when it really starts getting fun, as in: ‘Two beers and a portion of bitterballen, please’—that moment. Lidl has come up with the solution and is selling puff-pastry croquette rolls for drinks at home starting tomorrow. Hooray!

That’s right: cafés and restaurants may reopen their terraces from next week, but only between 12 noon and 6 p.m. According to Rutte, the limited terrace opening hours were chosen to keep the risks within bounds. ‘That means eliminating the bitterbal and the evening meal,’ his reasoning goes.

Keep your hands off our bitterbal!

Personally, I see things very differently. First of all: keep your hands off our bitterbal! And secondly: closing terraces so early will only encourage people to move to parks, won’t it? Or does Rutte think that then—lovely sunshine, drink finished, craving something tasty—we’ll all go back to our third-floor apartment at the back of beyond? I think it’s very naïve of the cabinet to think people will go home then. Six o’clock seems like the ideal time to pick up a bottle of wine, some tasty snacks and head to the park.

Croquette roll

During the ‘Hollandse Ons & Pond weeks‘, Lidl is coming up with the perfect solution for drinks in the park or at home, because starting tomorrow, new croquette rolls will be available on the shelves. A puff-pastry snack filled with croquette and mustard sauce sounds like the perfect base to me. And all for less than a euro. And pick up a wine (or 2, 3) while you’re at it; these are the six best-tested Lidl wines, and they cost next to nothing.
