Michelin: no fixed price anymore for a Bib Gourmand menu

Until recently, at restaurants with a Bib Gourmand distinction (not quite Michelin, but still exceptionally good), you paid a maximum of €39 for a three-course set menu. A truly great deal, but Michelin has announced that it is now abandoning this price. So what exactly is changing?

The Bib Gourmands – derived from Bibendum, the name of the famous Michelin Man – have been part of the Michelin Guide since 1955. It is not a star, but – to quote the guide itself: ‘certainly not a consolation prize either’. Bib Gourmand restaurants can be recognized by an image of the Michelin Man licking his lips. A restaurant cannot have both a star and a Bib Gourmand, by the way.

Total bill

The major change from Michelin, chief inspector Werner Loens tells hospitality trade magazine Misset Horeca, is that the total price for food and drinks will now play a role, whereas previously it did not. According to the new guidelines, a restaurant qualifies for a Bib Gourmand if the total bill does not exceed €65/€70 per person.

Set menu no longer required

Restaurants without a set menu can now also qualify for a Bib. The combined price of a starter and main course should then be around €45.

Value for money

‘Guests can continue to expect good value for money at a restaurant we award a Bib Gourmand. Inspectors must see that idea of “value for money” reflected in the company’s philosophy and in the chef’s ambition. And therefore also in all the prices on the menu,’ says Werner Loens.

Whether this will really make things clearer for consumers, I don’t know, but the fact remains that you can eat wonderfully at Bib Gourmand restaurants.
