One of my favorite chefs, Chris Naylor of Michelin-starred restaurant Vermeer, has something new: in July and August, the temporary barbecue restaurant Camping at Olof’s will open in Amsterdam’s oldest chapel: the Sint Olofskapel on Zeedijk.

From chapel to campsite

The restaurant is a continuation of Roomservice at Olof’s, the successful pop-up restaurant that was located at the same site four years ago. It was the Netherlands’ first flexitarian restaurant. This time, too, fresh vegetables form an important foundation, complemented by barbecue products. It will be a staycation restaurant, where you can enjoy a few hours of vacation. Besides a restaurant, there are various recreational activities in the monumental chapel, which will be transformed into a campsite for the summer. How fun is that?!

No burnt sausages

Chris Naylor: ‘The restaurant has the relaxed atmosphere of a campsite, but you don’t have to worry about burnt sausages and black chicken that you have to prepare yourself. We’ll do that for you: delicious BBQ dishes with the recognizable flavors of Vermeer, but at an accessible price.’ For 15 euros per person, you can book a campsite and receive an extensive salad platter with mezze-style dishes such as tabbouleh, burrata and hummus. You can also order dishes from a compact barbecue menu, such as black cod with white miso, mirin and sake, tuna steak with green herbs or lamb leg with tarragon ‘boudran’.

Sleep at home

Contrary to what the name may suggest, it is not possible to stay overnight. If you live in (greater) Amsterdam, you can book a room at one of the hotels participating in Hotelnacht Summer Staycation.

Camping at Olof’s is open daily from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. starting July 8. Reservations can be made via the special campsite website. Restaurant Vermeer is also open from Tuesday through Saturday during the summer months.
