M&M’s Get a New Look to Make Them More ‘Inclusive’ (But Nobody Can Tell the Difference)

Has anyone ever managed not to eat an entire bag of M&M’s in one go? I certainly haven’t. But this time, it’s not about what’s inside the bag, but about the M&M’s pictured on the bag. They’re getting a makeover to make the characters more inclusive.

Are you team peanut-yellow, chocolate-brown or crispy-blue? Whatever your choice, you no longer have to choose, because these days there’s a bag containing all three varieties. Smart move. But can a group of colorful M&M’s make the world a better place? The M&M employees in the marketing department certainly think so.
Spot the differences
The company has decided to give the brown, red, yellow, blue, green and orange characters a fresh new look in order to “create a world where everyone feels they belong”. Inclusivity, in other words.
But the difference is barely noticeable. According to the company, the characters have been given slightly more nuanced facial expressions to place extra emphasis on the importance of self-expression. In addition, the green M&M has swapped her boots for sneakers, while the brown M&M is no longer wearing high stilettos but a lower pump.
Can you spot the differences?

Little effect
Not everyone sees the point of changing the M&M’s. Some wonder whether anyone has ever actually compared themselves to the colorful characters in the first place, let alone whether it will contribute to inclusivity. Old or modern new M&Ms on the front of the bag; as far as I’m concerned, both are fine—the bag will still be empty just as quickly!
