New: De Bajes Beach Club (inside the most famous prison in the Netherlands!)
The beautiful restaurant and initiative A Beautiful Mess has opened something new: the Bajes Beach Club. Bajes Beach Club is a summery oasis within the walls of the old and most famous prison in the Netherlands. A unique location where you can enjoy amazing Middle Eastern dishes.
In the Bijlmerbajes
Where the famous prison stood from 1978 to 2016, there is now a summery oasis where you can enjoy a day at the beach in your own city until the end of September. Right in the middle of the courtyard of the former Bijlmerbajes, Bajes Beach Club has emerged. The menu is fingerlickin’ good, featuring delicious dishes developed by Merijn Tol (among other things, a cookbook author specialising in Arab-Mediterranean cuisines and a weekly food column in het Parool) together with the kitchen team. You can enjoy delectable dishes such as manou’che (flatbread with the irresistible za’atar spice blend), shawarma and, according to Mara Grimm, even the best labneh in Amsterdam.

Make a difference while sitting with your feet in the sand
Bajes Beach Club is part of Refugee Company. Through work-study programmes, Refugee Company offers people with a refugee background a safe path towards economic and social independence—an extra reason to visit this cool Beach Club! Claim your beach hut or a sunny spot in the sand and make a reservation through Bajes Beach Club. You pay €2.50 per person in reservation fees, which will be charged to your account. However, you can also indicate that it is a donation to Refugee Company’s projects and initiatives.
Utrecht and Arnhem
Bajes Beach Club (H.J.E. Wenckebachweg 48, 1096 AN, Amsterdam) is located in the same place as the A Beautiful Mess restaurant in the old Bijlmerbajes. From Wednesday through Sunday, you can have lunch, drinks and dinner from 12:00 to 23:00 (the kitchen closes at 21:30). Bajes Beach Club is open until the end of September. But there is more good news: this summer, a café in Utrecht (target date: 7 July) and a restaurant in Arnhem (target date: 1 August) will also open.
