New: vegan beach bar Pele Surf Shack

Hoek van Holland has been home to a new vegan beach bar for ten days now: Pele Surf Shack. The vibe here is exactly like in Hawaii, with your feet in the sand and a smoothie bowl in hand. And you can also stop by for a good cup of coffee.

They serve entirely plant-based smoothie bowls, poke bowls, burgers, pancakes and snacks. “We have two options for the burger. A plant-based burger with plant-based cheddar, for people who still want to feel like they’re eating meat. But we also have the seaweed burger for vegans who gave up meat a long time ago. Everything is free from milk, eggs and butter,” owner Charlotte Damen explains. “These days, I no longer think it makes sense to put meat on the menu; that simply isn’t my vision for the future.”

Coffee

They also pay extra attention to the coffee, she explains: “We have a coffee machine built especially for us, so we can measure and weigh the coffee very precisely. We use oat milk, but we also have almond or coconut milk. No one has said yet that they don’t like the cappuccino with oat milk.”

Relaxing

You could also describe the atmosphere as supremely relaxed. “The interior consists of recycled materials, lots of wood, vintage items and surfboards. The location was also a conscious choice: we’re situated between several surf schools, and everything is inspired by Hawaii. The name is a reference to the Hawaiian goddess Pele.” Curious?
