No decent tip? Then you won’t get a table in Saint-Tropez anymore
As if life wasn’t expensive enough already… Could it get just a little bit more expensive? At least if you’re heading to the Côte d’Azur; in Saint-Tropez, they’re completely fed up with people who don’t spend enough money. To be more specific: people who don’t spend enough on tips.
It’s gotten so bad there that you risk no longer getting a table when you give the staff what they consider to be too small a tip.
The mayor steps in
Many restaurants in already rather (understatement) expensive Saint-Tropez use an illegal database, in which they keep track of who (meaning which names) has given small tips at their restaurant. The result? If your name appears in it, many restaurants will refuse to give you a table. Well, well, well. And it’s not just the tip that counts, but the total bill as well; order the cheapest dishes? Nope, sorry, then this restaurant suddenly happens to be full for you.
Things have now gotten so out of hand that mayor Syvie Siri has to intervene. But that won’t happen until after the summer, she told the newspaper. She wants to sit down with all the restaurant owners then to, in her own words, ‘point out their responsibilities’. So if you’re thinking of heading to Saint-Tropez… I’d wait a while.
So what is a typical amount?
Bring that credit card; the restaurants are happy with 1,500 euros per person, or 5,000 euros per table. Good grief, what amounts. As far as I’m concerned, they can stick them where the sun doesn’t shine. An anonymous but very wealthy Italian agrees: he gave a ‘mere’ 500-euro tip in Saint-Tropez and was angrily pursued by his waiter in the car park. Well, how lovely…
