Supermarket chain Hoogvliet is the first in the Netherlands to start using Natural Branding: marking natural products with laser light. The reason? Fewer plastic packages.

They are starting with avocados and ginger. The organic varieties are often wrapped in plastic film in stores. This is to clearly distinguish them from conventional products. In Sweden and Germany, this method of branding has been used for some time already.

The other organic products in the fresh produce section are also often only available in plastic packaging, even though conscious customers who choose organic products would prefer to see this done differently. Hoogvliet expects to save 67,000 packages.

During the laser treatment, a small amount of pigment is removed from the outer layer of the skin. This has no effect whatsoever on the quality or shelf life of the ginger or avocado.
