On a budget: Bar Kauffmann

No energy left to cook? We get it. But tasty food is a must, never settle for less. That’s why we’ve put together our tips for truly delicious takeaways, the best delivery services and affordable places.

Specialists in just one dish are conquering cities and countries. From hummus bars to cider and haute-dog bars. We’ve known falafel shops for ages. You queue there like you would at a snack bar for a stuffed pita and, at most, a can of soft drink. Which you then devour standing up, walking or sitting on a municipal bench.
Falafel + Beer
Bar Kauffmann, named after the surname of owner Saskia, in Amsterdam-West is the first falafel beer bar. With its simple café interior with hanging plants, see-through floor, sunny terrace and tap, Kauffmann is not a place to rush in and out of in five minutes. Here, you sit down with family or friends to enjoy that homemade falafel sandwich, while being served at your table.
After eating, they can roll you out the door like a falafel ball
The menu features four falafel pitas – with mango, feta, green chilli or merguez. As a fifth option, you can choose your own toppings. If you’re really hungry, order a spinach or cucumber salad, fries, sweet potato, garlic bread or olives on the side.
Speciality Beers
No can of soft drink with it, but one of the twelve speciality beers, from breweries such as De Molen in Bodegraven. A glass of wine is also an option.
Anyone who can still say ‘falafel’ after dessert of rosewater ice cream with saffron is a real champ.
A Tenner
A sandwich plus a side dish costs you a tenner. Add a beer and you’ll be full for less than fifteen euros—so full they can roll you out the door like a falafel ball.
