Oops! This food was created by accident

An accident can happen in a small corner, but some accidents produce beautiful results. This food was created by accident, and we’re incredibly happy about that. Because how awful would life have been without chocolate-chip cookies.

You already knew that chips were invented by accident, of course, from our article. But did you know that the food below was also created by accident?
Oops, I dropped the lemon tart
This artistic dish by star chef Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana) came about when his pastry chef dropped a lemon tart on the floor during a busy moment. The chef was naturally worried, but Massimo thought the result of the fallen tart was beautiful and saw a new dish in it. It is now an iconic dessert. You can also make it yourself, by the way.
Chocolate-chip cookies
In 1930, American Ruth Wakefield invented the chocolate-chip cookie. Ruth always made chocolate cookies, but one day she discovered that she had run out of baking chocolate. What a disaster! So she decided to use a Nestlé chocolate bar, hoping it would melt. What happened next is no surprise: the chocolate did not melt and remained in the dough as chocolate pieces. The chocolate-chip cookie was born.
Chocolate ganache
Okay, this story may be too good to be true. In Switzerland, it is claimed that pastry chefs have been using ganache in truffles for hundreds of years. In France, however, the story goes that chocolate ganache was invented when a pastry chef’s assistant accidentally poured a bowl of cream into a bowl of chocolate. The pastry chef called his assistant ‘un ganache’, loosely translated as: idiot or fool. Eventually, the pastry chef discovered that the mixture of cream and chocolate was actually delicious.
Ice pops
In 1905, at the age of eleven, Frank W. Epperson put a stirring stick into a container of soda powder and water. He left it outside overnight, and when he went outside the next day, it had frozen. He later applied for a patent for his accident and voilà: the ice pop was born.
