Oops: woman accidentally buys dessert wine for dinner
It could happen to anyone; at an elaborate dinner, everyone gets a task and you end up being saddled with taking care of the wine. One of the easiest assignments, you would think—you only have to stock up on those bottles, after all. But if you know nothing about wine and decide to go by color and do no research beforehand… Things can turn out rather unpleasant.
Romy Bauer (51) knows all about that. Her husband decided to invite twelve people over for dinner and asked his wife to take care of the wine.
‘I don’t drink myself, so I know absolutely nothing about it’
Yes, that’s probably where things already start to go a little wrong. But Romy and her husband had also just moved house, and she wasn’t really looking forward to twelve people coming over for dinner, especially since they were her husband’s colleagues, whom she didn’t know. ‘David (her husband, ed.) knew that most of his colleagues love dry white wine. So I bought four bottles of Italian red wine and twelve bottles of French white wine costing 35 euros each. I asked an employee at the liquor store for advice.’
With 420 euros spent, she got ready for the dinner. ‘David was working a day shift and would come home just before the guests arrived. When he finally got home, I noticed that he was nervous too. He came into the kitchen, gave the Albert Heijn snacks a sideways glance, opened the fridge, looked at all those bottles and started shouting in a panic: Romy! This is Muscat! Just look at the label! You bought dessert wine, and it’s sweet, not dry!’

And really, it was mostly the liquor store employee’s mistake. Romy had not been living in the Netherlands with her husband for very long and didn’t speak Dutch, so in the end she didn’t go back to complain to the employee. Too bad, because I would really like to know what someone who sells Muscat as dry white wine is doing working in a liquor store. And what did Romy do with all those bottles? Return them with the receipt, right? RIGHT?!
Nope. ‘No one in our household likes it. After they had stood on the balcony for a year, I put them out with the bulky waste. They were gone within an hour.’
