Meat-loving Amsterdam can count itself lucky. From now on, you can order star chef Ron Blaauw’s spareribs and enjoy them from the comfort of your own sofa.

In 2013, Blaauw opened Ron Gastrobar*, which was so successful that three more locations followed, themed Oriental, Indonesia and Paris. And which dish is on the menu at every restaurant? Spareribs. Spareribs that you can now have delivered to your home or to your picnic blanket.

Four flavors

Four locations means four different kinds of ribs, each with its own flavor signature of that restaurant. You can choose from BBQ glaze (Ron Gastrobar), sweet-and-sour glaze (Ron Gastrobar Oriental), mustard-and-sauerkraut glaze (Ron Gastrobar Paris) and sambal glaze (Ron Gastrobar Indonesia).

To the test

FavorFlav’s Marieke and Emma put them to the test and ordered the ribs. We went for the sambal and mustard-and-sauerkraut flavors. The latter pairs so well with the pork that we wonder why we’ve never come across it before. The sambal glaze is well-seasoned, sweet and syrupy, and comes with crunchy peanuts. For something with sambal in the name, we would have liked it to be a little spicier. The meat is served boneless, so there’s no gnawing involved.

Sides

For side dishes, we order the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. There are also more refreshing options on the menu, such as atjar (Indonesian pickles) and salad. Both dishes are wonderfully creamy, and the texture of the mashed potatoes is perfect. The portions are enormous; we could easily have fed three people with our order. One portion of ribs costs € 15,- and a side is € 5,-, and we think it’s absolutely worth it.
