PARTY: Today is International Moscow Mule Day
Today is a PARTY, because it’s International Moscow Mule Day — and as it happens, it’s my favorite drink. In the period before COVID, I practically lived on them at the weekend. The hangovers I endured back then… I still have nightmares about them every now and then.
Dangerously delicious, then, this drink. That’s why I’m more careful with it these days, but of course I can’t let this festive day pass me by. I’m ordering one tonight. Or eighteen.
What exactly is a Moscow Mule?
A fairly simple cocktail, because you don’t even need to have a shaker at home. It consists of ginger beer, vodka, lime and Angostura bitters. The last ingredient in particular is often forgotten, which is such a shame, because it’s precisely what makes the Moscow Mule so delicious.
Contrary to what its name suggests, it doesn’t come from Moscow; this drink was invented in the 1940s at the Cock ‘n Bull bar in Los Angeles. A thousand thanks to that bar, then. Incidentally, I still get the best ones in Amsterdam at Venster 33 in De Pijp, should you feel like heading out tonight. It remains unbeatable for me — and I’ve ordered it at a great many bars already.
