The tastiest rum cocktails to make at home

rum cocktail

As far as we’re concerned, rum was never out of style, but if one drink has made its revival this year, it’s rum. In fact, rum may well go down in history as the drink of 2019. White rum, dark rum, neat or in a cocktail, rum can do it all.

Cocktail contest

That’s why we recently organised a cocktail competition in collaboration with Don Papa Rum. With rum taking centre stage, of course. Don Papa is the first premium rum from the Philippines, the world’s third-largest rum market after India and the US. Light amber in colour, with flavours of vanilla, honey and candied fruit. During a nerve-racking competition (you can watch the video again here), a range of outstanding rum cocktails were made. These are our three favourites to make at home.

Darker Don

You’ll need:
4 cl Don Papa Rum
1 cl fresh lime juice
Fentimans ginger beer
Mint & an extra lime wheel for garnish
How to make it:
Fill a highball glass with ice. Squeeze half a lime. Add the Don Papa Rum and top up with ginger beer. Stir with a cocktail spoon and garnish with a sprig of mint and a lime wheel.

Don Papa Daiquiri

You can never go wrong with a daiquiri. This fresh, tart cocktail, a combination of rum, lime juice and sugar syrup, is elegant and simple. It became popular in the 1940s, when whiskey and vodka were difficult to obtain but rum was plentiful. It is reminiscent of the grog that British sailors drank on board and became immensely popular throughout the Caribbean.

You’ll need:
4 cl Don Papa Rum
1.5 cl fresh lime juice
1 cl agave syrup
Bitters
How to make it:
Put all the ingredients in a shaker. Shake vigorously. Double strain into a chilled martini glass and add 3 drops of bitters. (When double straining, in addition to a strainer – the tool you place over the open part of your shaker to prevent ice from being poured out when serving your cocktail – you also use a small sieve when pouring).

Ready to get started?

You can find Don Papa at Gall&Gall, among others, and at your local liquor store. Besides making excellent cocktails with it, Don Papa is ‘a rum that’s good enough to drink neat.‘ Pour the rum into a cocktail glass and drink it neat on the rocks, with one large ice cube or several small ice cubes.
