Pasta lovers, listen up: have you heard of spaghetti ice cream?
Most people know that, alongside sausages and beer, you can also eat excellent Turkish food in Germany. Long live immigration. But did you know that plenty of Italians also came to Germany? Bringing some very good ideas with them…
Dario Fontanella is one of them. The son of an Italian immigrant and owner of an ice cream parlour in the German city of Mannheim, in 1969 he came across a few children who were crying their eyes out because they wanted ice cream instead of a plate of pasta. So Dario came up with the fantastic idea for a hybrid dish that makes the cronut pale in comparison: spaghetti ice cream. Or, in German: Spaghettieis.
Just like the real thing
Sounds strange, but in fact it’s simply vanilla ice cream pressed through a device so that it resembles strands of spaghetti. Neatly twirl it onto a plate, pour a generous dollop of strawberry sauce over it and you’ve got the ‘tomato sauce’. Coconut flakes, icing sugar or pieces of almond work well as Parmesan.
Medal
In 2014, Fontanella received Mannheim’s Boomaulorden medal for his creation. And we can certainly see why. Although it was a hidden gem on German ice cream menus for a long time, the ice cream is now making its way into the mainstream. What else would you expect? It fits perfectly alongside cronuts, duffins and cretzels.
