Pianeta Terra is (once again) the best Italian restaurant in the Netherlands
The Italian restaurant Pianeta Terra has been tucked away in a beautiful side street near Koningsplein in Amsterdam for almost 25 years. You could almost walk past it without ever noticing it, it’s so well hidden. But make sure you don’t. The Italian Slow Food restaurant has (once again!) been named the best Italian restaurant in the Netherlands.
New Italian restaurants keep opening in the capital. We recently dined at the cosmopolitan VENTUNO skylounge and the cheerful Gio’s by the River. Both places offer great food and a great setting. But at Pianeta Terra, they follow a distinctly different philosophy: that of Slow Food—and you can see and taste it.
50 Top Italy list
Italië Magazine named Pianeta Terra, run by Fabio Antonini, Laura Martini and Raul Mini, the best Italian restaurant in the Netherlands last year, and they also ranked 30th on the list of the 50 best Italian restaurants in the world. They have raced past that position in the new 2023 list; they are now in the 23rd place on the 50 Top Italy list. There is another Dutch restaurant on this list, by the way: Aroma Italian Fine Dining in Vaassen (in 43rd place). This year, Aroma was named the best Italian restaurant in the Netherlands by Italië Magazine).
The lists compiled by 50 Top Italy are put together by a team of 150 anonymous and independent inspectors, as well as 200 independent experts from home and abroad. They consider their best experiences outside Italy. According to the organization, every assessment of a restaurant must be verifiable.
Special Slow Food dishes
Last year, I ate at Pianeta Terra for the first time. And within a few hours, I was completely blown away. Not because of the excellent pizza or pasta Bolognese, because—as fantastic as these Italian classics are—they don’t serve them here. No, at Pianeta Terra, local heroes such as pork jowl from Buitengewone Varkens, wild Wadden Sea oysters from Goede Vissers and—brace yourself—crow breast from De Keuken van het Ongewenst Dier shine in innovative Italian dishes.
They serve excellent wines alongside the food, and here too, you won’t find standard bottles on the menu. Big or famous names? Forget it: Laura’s Italian wine list is entirely organic or even biodynamic and natural.
Italian hospitality
Aside from the special, flavorful dishes and excellent wine selection, you can also feel the genuine hospitality here, ensuring that you always leave feeling good. And that is precisely the embodiment of Italian hospitality they stand for here.
