Pigs in a quilt: hotdogs in puff pastry 2.0
Hotdogs in puff pastry – affectionately called pigs in a blanket in England – who doesn’t know them? They were one of my favorite school treats. Easy to make and delicious. Now Delish has given them an upgrade: pigs in a quilt.

A quilt? That’s a typically British checked blanket. Instead of cocktail sausages, you use hotdogs and ‘weave’ them into the dough, making it look – yes – like a quilt. Still delicious and simple, but with just a little more flair than its little brother.
Here’s how to make the pigs in a quilt:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C and line the baking sheet with parchment paper. You can optionally grease the paper slightly.
- Lightly dust your work surface with flour and roll out the bread dough. Cut it in half lengthwise. Cut each half lengthwise into 8 thin strips. Place the first set of strips on the prepared baking sheet.
- Then comes the ‘weaving’. It’s quite difficult to explain, but check the video and you’ll understand immediately. Fold back alternate strips and place a hotdog underneath. Then bring the folded-back strips back over the hotdog and continue alternating. Place the second hotdog and repeat the weaving process until you reach the end of the strips, using 6 hotdogs. Repeat this to make a second quilt.
- Trim the sides of the dough, brush the dough with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake until deep golden brown, 16 to 18 minutes.
- Cut into squares and serve with mustard.
