Pink hands after cutting beets? Here’s how to get rid of it

Bieten snijden

Nothing is more annoying than those kitchen stains that, no matter how hard you try to remove them, sometimes end up permanently embedded in your clothes. Or hands. Because when preparing beets, they can turn bright pink and stay that way…

There are plenty of tips for removing the most common stains you pick up in the kitchen or while eating. From wine to turmeric, there is always one remedy that works wonders. And the same goes for beets: to clean your beet-stained hands, all you need is a lemon or a potato.

Lemon

Easy does it: cut a lemon in half and rub it all over your hands. The juice will automatically reduce the pink glow. You can also soak your hands in lukewarm water with lemon (or bottled lemon juice).

Potato

A raw potato is also an effective solution. Cut this in half as well, then rub your hands with the cut side. Rinse them briefly with water and your hands will be perfectly clean again—and the potato pink.

Olive oil

These tips are handy, of course, but prevention may be better than cure. So wear plastic gloves when cutting beets to prevent your hands from turning pink. What also helps is rubbing your hands with olive oil. Really! It may sound a little slippery, admittedly, but the oil prevents the color from sticking to your hands.
