Recipe for a Delicious Club Sandwich

The Club Sandwich (1)

This sandwich, whether double- or triple-decker, comes from the United States. Every hotel, anywhere in the world, has its own version of the club sandwich on the menu. Above all, make this classic to suit your own taste.

The club sandwich was most likely invented at the end of the nineteenth century during a horse race in New York. The oldest recipe for the now-famous classic can be found in Isabel Gordon Curtis’s 1903 book Good Housekeeping Everyday Cook Book. In it, the club sandwich is made with toasted bread, lightly spread with butter, topped with a slice of bacon, chicken or turkey, and finished with a slice of ripe tomato, a lettuce leaf and a layer of mayonnaise. Here, we also add a little mustard and onion for an extra thrill.

How to make the club sandwich

  • Bring water to a boil in a saucepan, add the egg and cook for 7 minutes. Remove the egg from the pan and let it cool in a bowl of cold water. Peel the egg and slice it.
  • Meanwhile, fry the bacon in a frying pan or under the grill. Toast the slices of bread on both sides under the grill or in a toaster.
  • Spread half of the mayonnaise over one of the toasted slices of bread. Top with the lettuce, cucumber, chicken and onion. Cover the onion with one of the other toasted slices of bread and spread it with mustard. Top with the cheese, bacon, tomato and egg. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Spread the remaining mayonnaise over the last toasted slice of bread and place it on top, mayonnaise-side down. Secure with a cocktail stick to hold the slices of bread together.
