Gingerbread men

Christmas is just around the corner! Take a breath, destress, channel a mantra or simply pour yourself something soothing. FavorFlav has countless great tips for you and plenty of recipes to get through Christmas without any mishaps. The caterers at The Holy Kauw Company, for example, are used to providing stress-free food and drinks any time of year, making them part of that special group of people who don’t tear each other’s hair out in the December kitchen. Take advantage of it!

These gingerbread men are incredibly cute. That’s why I always feel sorry when a leg accidentally breaks while decorating them with icing. If you don’t eat them yourself right away, they’re also lovely to give as a gift during the holidays.

How to make the gingerbread men

  • Mix the butter and sugar with a hand mixer until creamy, then beat in the syrup.
  • Stir the spices, salt and baking powder into the flour. Using the dough hooks of the hand mixer, gently mix it into the butter mixture until a smooth dough forms.
  • Wrap the dough in cling film and let it rest in the refrigerator for 60 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 190°C.
  • Dust the work surface with flour and roll out the dough to an evenly thick sheet. Cut out the cookies and place the men on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake the gingerbread men for 10 minutes until nicely browned, then let them cool on a wire rack.
  • Meanwhile, make the icing. Gradually stir the water into the sugar until it reaches the right consistency.
  • Color the icing with (natural) food coloring and decorate the men.
